Preparing to be Photographed

Everything you need to know before we begin.

We are so excited to be working with you and want to make this experience as memorable as possible.

Being photographed is new, it can be daunting so we want to ensure we can make this fun and stress free.

Mood Boards

Photos always come out best when we get to know you really well. It’s a collaborative experience and so we would LOVE to dive into what inspires you and the things you love doing together so we can build off of that. This is super helpful for us in terms of planning an itinerary.

Here's an example for what I would make if I were doing this.

If you don’t know where to start make a list of things you find inspiring - mine would be:

  • Poetry - specifically Keaton Hensons work

  • Music - specifically Keaton Henson’s Romantic Works, Taylor Swift’s Evermore & Fearless, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Score.

  • Cosy Vibes - Autumnal Colours, Long Coats, Neutrals, Cups of Tea

  • Nature - Mountains and Beaches, Ferns, Fallen Leaves

  • Photography - Movement, Light, Intimacy

  • Cinema - Pride & Prejudice, Normal People

  • Nostalgia - 35mm Film, Polaroids

Feel free to interpret this as you wish and send us anything that we can build from inspiration wise!

Things to think about:

Before the Day

WHAT TO WEAR

This is the question we get asked most often. We want you to love how you look in your photos and the core of achieving that is simply wearing something you feel like yourself in and that you feel beautiful in. Yes we’re happy to offer guidance on colours etc BUT we want you to feel like YOU so if you feel more comfortable in a pair of jeans over a dress then wear the jeans!

Here are some of the things we’d recommend thinking about when it comes to what you’re wearing:

  • Colour. Generally speaking it is good to keep in mind what colour the landscape of where you’re being photographed is and therefore what colours would make you stand out from the landscape or would make you fit into the landscape. Good colours are often Creams, Beiges, Browns, Rusts, Blacks

  • If you’re someone who likes wearing patterns we’d recommend having only one person in something patterned so as to not create too much busyness.

  • Clothing with movement often creates a really beautiful dynamic to photographs so if you’re a dress wearer we’d recommend something floaty rather than something tight and same for coats, if you’re wearing a coat we’d recommend something you can still have good movement in.

  • Layers - especially for colder days having something you can layer up in is great!

  • Sensible footwear - Hiking boots, Blundstones or Dr Martens are all good options for being safe on foot!

  • Things to Avoid: Logos, lots of patterns, combining different shades of blues.

Below we’ll leave some examples of what other couples have worn that has worked well visually to give you a little bit of inspiration:

Other Tips

Get an early night.

Especially if we’re shooting at sunrise, you’ll want to turn up feeling fully refreshed. We’d recommend avoiding drinking alcohol the night before too.

Plan to arrive early.

The roads in Scotland can be pretty unpredictable so we’d recommend checking for any road closures along your route and giving yourselves ample time so you don’t arrive feeling flustered or stressed.

Plan to keep the day around the session a chilled one.

In order for you to feel fully present and in the moment we’d recommend not making too many plans for the day. Have the session as the event of the day and allow whatever you do before / after to be loose. We don’t want your mind to be worrying about getting to another booking for a certain time etc.

Don’t put pressure on yourselves.

We just want you to have fun, appreciate the landscape you’re in and the person you’re sharing it with. If theres anything you’d like to bring / incorporate to make the experience feel more ‘you’ then let’s do that!
